Dangerous Rhythms has showcased a tremendous wealth of talent in the past year and this evening's program was a particular treat. Caridad de la Luz is the epitome of a Renaissance woman: an accomplished poet, actress, and singer who has been performing professionally for over two decades. Born and bred in The Bronx with Puerto Rican roots, de la Luz aka "La Bruja" (Good Witch) has a trademark distinctively deep, husky voice: bold. street-wise, and soulful. When she performs, one cannot help but absord its power, radiating with New York grit and flavor. The evening's performance was comprised of a one woman show de la Luz had written a few years back in honor of the incomprable La Lupe, the queen of Latin Soul. Accompanied only by distiguished conguero Wilson "Chembo" Corniel, the work expands a wide range of styles: poetry, singing, chanting and even rapping. It was truly remarkable to intimately watch someone emit and channel the utter passion and pain of La Lupe.
The multi-talented La Bruja awaiting to cast a spell on the Zinc Bar audience.
The great conguero Chembo Corniel provides the heartbeat to de la Luz's distinctive sound.
Three words: Grace, beauty and strength.
The spirit of La Lupe was clear and present this evening.
Letting the groove be one's guide...
La Bruja's theatrics are clearly appreciated by Chembo.
New York's treasure.
Spitting lyrics.
Giving us all "Fever"... La Lupe style.
T.J. presents La Bruja with a Dangerous Rhythms t-shirt that she was thrilled to represent.
