This evening's performance was the perfect example of not following the script, which one can tend to rely on with the Dangerous Rhythms series. To say it more succinctly, expect the unexpected. Hector Martignon's 3-piece band was comprised of a piano, an upright bass and a percussionist that had everything except the kitchen sink at his disposal. Add in guest Flamenco vocalist Ismael de la Rosa Fernandez (also known as "El Bola"), and the result was a very lush and almost cinematic soundscape. The array of styles ranged literally all the over the map with a dose of heavy Spanish Flamenco singing, to South America with Samba elements and Cuba with an wild mix of sounds. The biggest takeaways this evening was the masterful playing of Martignon who just electrified the crowd, and the voice of El Bola who had the largely female crowd on the edge of their seats. It was a remarkable night of music.
