Opening night of Dangerous Rhythms' new home, the wonderful Birdland Theater, was literally and figuratively filled with magical vibes from the onset, as the band, Sally's Tomato, took the stage. (Strange name, right?) The band's name is derived from the famous Cal Tjader penned number from the film Breakfast At Tiffany's. Performing the work of the legendary vibraphonist, the group's leader conguero Sammy Figueroa was backed by a powerhouse of top notch talent. Vibes player Felipe Fournier makes his second appearance to the series, and was simply tremendous... and quite dextrous I'll add! (watch the video) Pianist Bill O'Connell, also a returning musician to the series, was equally brilliant. The esteemed rhythm section of José Claussell and brothers
Daniel & Marcos Torres rounded out a truly great band that kept the capacity crowd on the edge of their seats. A true summer scorcher!
A tribute to Cal Tjader... let the games begin!
Sammy's a true character! A great host for the opening of the lovely new venue.
Vibraphonist Felipe Fournier was absolutely sensational.
Percussionist José Claussell, a longtime brother in rhythm with Sammy Figueroa.
A little crowd participation never hurt anyone.
The Torres brothers holding down the groove.
The magnificent pianist Bill O'Connell, a longtime member of the late great Dave Valentin's band.
Keeping up with the frenetic pace.
A gracious round of applause for a fantastic performance.
T.J. and Sammy breaking in the new digs. A GREAT start to many great things to come!
