Tonight's tribute to Andy Gonzalez to a capacity crowd, was unequivocally the personification of what the Dangerous Rhythms series has become, and has always aspired to achieve from its inception: true community through the vehicle of music. Luques Curtis was a teen when he was introduced to Andy Gonzalez of the Fort Apache Band, but his legacy and influence would have a lasting impact on the direction of his style and career. It was particularly special to have the honoree actually on hand to witness and receive the love, also a first for the series. Luques' tone on bass was big, round and beautiful... fully leading the charge. Manuel Valera's dexterity and pace on piano was astonishing. And the rhythm section of Molina and Martinez was beautifully accentuated. These dudes all came to PLAY and it was an honor to witness. There also were cameos from trumpeters Carlos Abadie and Kali Rodriguez Peña, and flutist Colette Michaan who added an extra level of excitement and class to the evening. This one was a true milestone!
A very personal tribute from bassist Luques Curtis to his mentor and friend Andy Gonzalez.
