The audience at the Birdland Theatre witnessed a document of living history this evening courtesy of Bobby Sanabria & Sexteto Ibiano. Having played with Tito Puente often in his career, Sanabria's tribute to the legend felt very personal, presented with fascinating historical details revealing pivotal moments in the development of the great musician. The band's music followed a similar path, and gave credence to the diaspora of sounds that Puente incorporated in his canon over his lengthy career. The capacity crowd were in high spirits and the band naturally fed off this highly energetic room. The performances were fantastic, most notably pianist Yeisson Villamar and trombonist Chris Washburne. The band was swinging and Bobby's timbale work truly sent the audience over the top. This show had a great New York during the Holidays feel!
