The legendary Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona is without question one of the major contributors to the emergence of Latin music as a power in the world marketplace. Commonly referred to as the "Gershwin of Cuba", Lecuona is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and his immense musical catalog spanned over 50 years and amassed over 600 known compositions primarily in the 1910's-1950's. That being said, this evening's performance was a bit of a departure from the more frenetic, uptempo sound that the series has coined its name from. The music here was noticeably more lush and featured a predominance of bass and flute parts, with Valera's piano providing the musical bedrock. Percussionists Mauricio Herrera and Samuel Torres playing added heightened punch to the traditional numbers, but all members soloed and put their true talents on display. Flutist Itai Kriss and bassist Gregg August led the charge and blessed the near capacity crowd with a night of beautiful music.
